THE MAYA BIOSPHERE RESERVE

The MBR

The Maya Biosphere Reserve (MBR) is the largest protected natural reserve in Guatemala. Located in the upper northern part of the country, it is the largest area of tropical forest outside the Amazon. The area ranges from wetlands to low mountain ranges and has several lakes, rivers, and streams. The climate ranges from wet to dry seasons, but mostly semitropical with temperatures normally in the mid 20 Celsius.

Vulnerability

Despite its beauty, the Reserve has been also highly vulnerable to climate change and threats to the land from the effects of deforestation and loss of biodiversity.

FOREST COMMUNITY CONCESSIONS

Who are the Concession Workers of the Maya Biosphere Reserve?

At the heart of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, these community members make up the forest community concessions who create the non-timber forest products which are then sold around the world. For these concessions workers, it is their livelihood and their vocation. It represents who they are and for the people they serve.
